Regional Venture Capital Resources for Life Science Companies

Long Island Capital Alliance (LICA)

Since 1984, the Long Island Capital Alliance (LICA) has been striving to stimulate capital formation and business development on Long Island by providing networking in a business-friendly environment, valuable strategic advice, the chance to meet with prominent capital providers, the connections companies need to grow their businesses, and a focal point for the exchange of ideas.  LICA's mission is to encourage economic development on Long Island by facilitating capital formation for a broad range of companies in various industries, from start-ups to mature middle market, and closely held businesses.  LICA seeks to create a productive and business-friendly environment that will afford area businesses with access to the resources necessary to compete successfully in today's markets. LICA serves as a focal point for the exchange of ideas among new and existing business enterprises, successful entrepreneurs, investors, and service providers. Through monthly meetings, our annual luncheon, and the LI/NY Metro Capital Forum, a highly successful venture capital conference, LICA brings together members of the region's business community.

New York City Investment Fund (NYCIF)

New York City Partnership (NYCP)

The New York City Investment Fund is a private fund with a civic mission.  The Fund was established in late 1996, under the auspices of the nonprofit The Partnership for New York City. It was initially capitalized by contributions of $1 million each from sixty-seven individual and corporate investors, who invested for the good of the city and without expectation of financial returns.  The Fund has raised in excess of $100 million, and its investments typically range in size from $1 million to $3 million, but only alongside an experienced lead venture capital investor.  The Fund provides equity or debt, structured to meet the needs of the project. It will invest at any stage of business development, but is seeking to exit in about five years.

Small Business Technology Investment Fund (SBTIF)

Empire State Development Corporation (ESDC)

The Small Business Technology Investment Fund (SBTIF) provides start-up high-tech companies throughout New York State with a source of venture capital to promote new job creation and economic growth. The Fund makes early stage equity investments in companies that have developed innovative technology products or services and that display significant competitive advantage. It also offers technical and managerial services to growing technology-based business ventures.  To be considered, companies must have well-protected intellectual property. Interested in all technologies, the Fund has invested in software, biotechnology, electronics, optics, telecommunications, and materials science, concentrating its efforts in areas of the State typically underserved by venture capitalists.  All SBTIF investments require 3:1 matching funds that may include backing from private sector venture capital firms, private investors, federal sources, or other public sources outside New York State. Typical investments range from $50,000 to $500,000. Most investments take the form of preferred or common stock; occasionally, convertible debt instruments are issued. The State seldom owns more than 10% of a portfolio company.
